Garden Eden – I don’t know about you, but I came out of Sunday school as a child thinking that God created a garden for Adam and Eve, a paradise on earth for his children, and they destroyed it by obeying the devil.
God plants the garden in the second chapter of Genesis. He “formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

That’s right, Adam is a worker. The garden? It is not for men – it is for gods. (Yes, gods are plural, we’ll get to that.)
As a general rule, this is how the gods of the ancient Near East did things. The Sumerian god Enki made men carry clay baskets on a canal construction project so the young gods would stop working. The Babylonian god Marduk “liberated the gods” by turning them into “men burdened with [their] service.” The Mesopotamian god Enlil made mankind “to take up spades and baskets for the benefit of the house of the great gods.”

But in all these stories, the new help turns out to be difficult. They are lazy, they steal, they are loud all night. In short, they are intentional beings.

“It is not good for man to be alone. I will make him his mate. Then he took one of his ribs and covered it with flesh.And the Lord made the man’s ribs into a woman and brought her to the man.
And sure enough, it’s all downhill here. The serpent tells Eve that Jehovah is by the tree in the middle of the garden, that she eats the fruit, she gives it to Adam and he eats it, they realize that they are naked, and go to make some clothes from the fig leaves. And then…
When the evening wind blew they heard the Lord God walking in the garden, and the man and his wife hid themselves under the trees in the garden from the presence of the Lord God. But the Lord called the man and asked him: “Where are you?” He said: I was in hiding. He said, “Who told you that you are naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said: The woman you gave to be with me gave me fruit from the tree and I ate.

If God did not want Adam and Eve to eat the fruit, why did he put the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the garden?
Damn yard! It is not a paradise made for humans. It is a place where divine beings roam, enjoying the fresh air, breathtaking views and fruit from sacred trees that mere mortal gardeners want to get their little hands on!
As they say in Westeros, these are the old gods. They are powerful, but they are not omnipotent or omniscient. Jehovah does not know where people are if they are not seen. He did not know in advance that they would not hear him.

But then the Hebrews — like all the ancient peoples of the Near-Eastern — believed in many gods, had families, fought wars, joked, got drunk and formed governments like their worshippers. We still see bits and pieces of the ancient theology in the earliest writings compiled in the Hebrew Bible, including the Lord’s explanation to the assembly of why he decided to kill the people he brought into Eden to send out:
“Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, he will stretch out his hand and take from the tree of life and eat and live forever.
So the Lord sent the two men out of the eastern gate of the garden, and placed cherubim with flaming swords as guards against their return. (However, the cherubim were not naked little guys with the wings of doves; they were some kind of human/large animal hybrid with four wings, and were not to be taken for granted.)
It was a wild animal. Until the Lord cursed the tree because he told Eve the truth about the tree, presumably with legs or wings like other animals, and spoke as gods and men:

“Because you have done this, you are cursed among all the animals and among all the wild animals. You will go on your stomach and eat dust all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your children and her. He will beat your head and you will beat his heels.
We must remember that Satan does not go around biting people’s heels and avoiding blows from people who try to hit him on the head. Snakes do it.
Even at this point in Hebrew theology, the being we think of as the devil did not yet exist. For example, there was a member of the divine council named Satan (the accuser) who appears in the framing device for the story of Job, but is not named.
In the Second Temple period, after the Babylonian exile, traditions of evil spirits and fallen angels would arise in Judaism, but that would come into the story centuries later.

So, God did not make a perfect garden for people to live in and the devil was not there. I was stuck.

According to Genesis 2 of the Bible, for those who are not religious or familiar with the story of Adam and Eve, the garden of Eden was the first home for humans. It is said to be a paradise where everything is perfect. There was no disease, no death and no famine.
Unfortunately, Adam and Eve were banned from the Garden after they disobeyed God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Since then, people live in a fallen state, subject to all the diseases of the world.

It is no secret that man has been searching for it since his exile from the Garden of Eden. Its discovery verifies the creation story and provides convincing evidence that the events of the Bible took place. Fortunately, many people believe that it is still waiting to be discovered somewhere.
However, the Bible gives some clues as to where it is. In Genesis it says that the garden is in the east. Also, four rivers flowed from the garden, two of which have been identified as Tigris and Euphrates.
